Greg DeWitt demonstrating Rank Math SEO optimization for entrepreneurs during a Watch Me Work session for entrepreneurs
Improving SEO scores live inside a Watch Me Work session with Greg DeWitt.

The Gogo Marketing “Watch Me Work” Gogo Live sessions are designed to show entrepreneurs exactly how strategic marketing, website development, and SEO optimization for entrepreneurs come together to create measurable results. In today’s live session, we focused on one of our own in-house projects: Kern River Surf Co., a satirical yet fully functioning brand that brings humor, storytelling, and merchandising into the world of e-commerce.

The project gives us a safe, playful way to test strategies while showing entrepreneurs what can be done with a strong foundation. This week, we took a close look at search engine optimization, walking through step-by-step updates that improved the site’s SEO in real time.

Why Kern River Surf Co. Matters as a Case Study

Kern River Surf Co. is not your average online shop. The brand plays on the irony of surf culture in Bakersfield, California, where the Kern River is dry most of the year. What began as a clever joke has evolved into a print-on-demand apparel business featuring t-shirts, hoodies, and accessories.

The brand identity is built around:

  • Humorous local lore: Imaginary surf legends, jokes about “catching waves” in canals, and storytelling tied to Bakersfield’s geography.
  • Fictional content for engagement: Blog posts and site copy that lean into the absurdity while still functioning as SEO content.
  • Authentic merch offering: Despite the humor, the products are real, and the site functions as a true e-commerce store.

This makes Kern River Surf Co. a powerful teaching tool. It allows us to demonstrate high-level strategy without exposing client keyword strategies.

Current SEO Performance

Before making changes, we reviewed how the site is already performing:

Primary Keyword Ranking: Kern River Surf Co. ranks #1 for Surf Shop Kern County.

Secondary Keywords: For Surf Shop Bakersfield, the results page is dominated by national retailers like National Brand #1 and National Brand #2. There used to be a local surfshop, but the closed and have only one remaining location. They are listed in page 3 of the Google SERP.

Branded Searches: For Kern River Surf, the site controls 8 out of 10 results. That shows the power of a strong URL.

Local Geo Searches: Phrases like surf gear plus a city name showed inconsistent results, presenting an opportunity for growth. Frankly, there aren’t many inland surf shops. Kind of like sister site Truxtun Lakes Yacht Club – there are no yachts on the Truxtun “lakes” docks.

Conclusion: The site already owns its primary niche but has room to strengthen secondary keywords and expand its local visibility.

Step-by-Step SEO Optimization for Entrepreneurs

Here’s how we improved Kern River Surf Co.’s homepage SEO during today’s live session.

  1. Fixing the URL Structure

We identified keyword stuffing in the existing URL slug. Clean URLs help search engines and users alike, so we updated it to remove unnecessary repetition. Google penalizes keyword stuffing in URL’s, so don’t do it.

  1. Updating the SEO Title

The new title was written to align with best practices: Kern River Surf Company | Surf Shop Kern County for Apparel and Gear. This kept the primary keyword front and center while maintaining brand consistency.

  1. Rewriting the Meta Description

We crafted a natural, keyword-rich description that speaks to both Google and human readers. It included phrases like Surf Shop Bakersfield and Local Surf Gear without sounding forced.

  1. Supporting Keywords

We incorporated supporting keywords directly into the homepage content and meta tags. We’re not going to list them out here because that would defeat the purpose of have a keyword strategy.

  1. Social Sharing Optimization

We created a custom image for Open Graph and social media cards, ensuring that the site looks professional when shared across platforms. There’s nothing worse than seeing a site icon with a transparent background with a marketing post on a social feed.

  1. Content Placement

We added a short, keyword-rich paragraph to the homepage so that the primary keyword appears early in the page content.

  1. Image Optimization

Every image on the homepage was updated with descriptive alt text that included relevant keywords while staying accessible for screen readers.

Result: These combined efforts improved the site’s SEO significantly, demonstrating the value of hands-on optimization.

Competitor Analysis

No SEO strategy is complete without knowing the competition. We examined sites from National Brand #1 and National Brand #2, as well as other regional players. What we found was surprising:

  • National Brand #1: Missing alt attributes, weak metadata, and no Open Graph configuration.
  • National Brand #2: No meta description, leaving Google to auto-generate snippets. Seriously, the Google card was blank. Not even a site title–from a major national brand!
  • Regional Competitors: Sparse keyword optimization and limited content depth. There was a smattering of “local” competitors with social links or under-construction concepts, but nothing solid within 100 miles.

Conclusion: Even major competitors leave critical SEO opportunities on the table. This creates an opening for smaller, agile brands like Kern River Surf Co. to dominate niche searches with smart strategy.

Lessons for Entrepreneurs

So, what can entrepreneurs learn from this session?

  • Local SEO Wins: Even in competitive categories, local optimization often beats big-box SEO when done correctly.
  • Clean Structure Matters: Simple, keyword-rich URLs, titles, and descriptions create clarity for both users and search engines.
  • Content Placement Is Key: Put important keywords near the top of your content, not buried halfway down the page.
  • Competitor Weakness = Opportunity: Don’t assume national brands have airtight SEO. Their scale often leaves them vulnerable.
  • Holistic Branding Pays Off: SEO isn’t just technical. It works best when integrated with brand identity, storytelling, and design.
